The Idea:
21st Century Durham
21st Century Durham strives to bring Durham up to the 21st Century by implementing new technology into the every day lives of people in our community. We believe that a modern education requires exhaustive understanding of technology and its applications. Many students in the Durham area do not have access to computers in their schools, nor in their homes. As many of these students are English Second Language (ESL) learners, they are in even more need of the opportunity to play with words on a computer, and learn through computer technology. Providing schools and community institutions such as the Ronald McDonald House with the opportunity to purchase very inexpensive computers will make Durham’s children competitive in the modern job market by bringing them up to date with 21st Century technology.
Our mission is to bring Durham, NC into the 21st century by implementing new technology into the every day lives of people in our community. We take Duke University’s old computers, upload free software known as edubuntu, and install computer labs in schools and other community institutions. This process does not end at the purchase and install of the computers however. We also seek to educate those who are either under-trained or not trained at all in computing’s most basic functions such as word processing and internet browsing, and to undertake website development for Durham’s organizations that have either no, or a very poor website, so that students teachers and community projects alike can be up to date with the 21st Century.
