Team Information:

Our group is the single service branch of Duke University’s Circle K. Duke’s Circle K aims to better both local and international communities by focusing on outreach, leadership, and community collaboration to provide a positive and sustainable impact. Our mission as the Cultural Convergence International group is to work with impoverished communities throughout the world to provide resources and equipment for organized youth athletics, as well as to support other needs identified by community leaders including educational assessment of neighborhood educational services for children.

The Idea:

Cultural Convergence International

Our group will identify areas in the Dominican Republic in need of a community service project along with assessment of the educational services provided to children in the area. We will be providing a way for children to learn a new sport and continue staying active through the identification of community leaders willing to serve as guides. We will also provide medical supplies to schools in hopes that they will provide supplies for on site emergencies. We wish to keep the children active, safe, and provide them with an innovation that they can all benefit from such as a kitchen or electricity.

We believe that we have an obligation to help strengthen communities through youth athletics along with doing some sort of service project to better the community. We would like to teach the kids two different sports during our time in the Dominican Republic and also provide the tools for them to continue with the programming when we leave. We identify community members who share our passion for helping youth and will be the leadership necessary for the programs to continue. We also focus on a service project that can better the lives of those living in the community we are fortunate to spend time with. We have recently added the idea to do educational assessments on the schools in the area in order to provide a research foundation for future educational changes. We also bring medical supplies collected through Duke’s Remedy program. A demonstration on how to use these supplies will be given and distribution of these items will be given to those community centers which need them most. Our goal is to only take away memories and a better understanding of a social problem while we leave behind sustainable sports programs, needed medical supplies, and a project useful to the community.
